Urban Planner: December 29, 2009
Urban Planner is Torontoist’s guide to what’s on in Toronto, published every weekday morning, and in a weekend edition Friday afternoons. If you have an event you’d like considered, email all of its details—as well as images, if you’ve got any—to [email protected].

ART: You’ve got battles of the bands, improv comedy battles, and dance-offs, but now, finally, the visual arts are putting on their smocks and stepping into the competitive art world with Art Battle. In the third event, four matches between two artists are held, with the winner being chosen by the audience. The first two matches are culled from whoever shows up to participate. Participants are chosen randomly for those matches, while the third match is chosen through the photos posted on the Facebook event page, and the fourth match is between artists chosen by the organizers. Tonight’s main event is between Jenal Dolson and Peter Templeman. The best part of Art Battle TO? At the end they auction off all the pieces, and the ones that don’t meet the reserve price get destroyed. The Great Hall (1087 Queen Street West); 7 p.m.; $10 if you’re just there to watch, $5 if you want the chance to compete.
PARTY: Since this decade is coming to a close, it’s time to remember the decade that was… a decade ago. Girl and Boy: A ’90s Dance Party is happening tonight, and there will be plenty of Dance Mix 95, Pulp, Run DMC Vs. Aerosmith, and Harvey Danger to go around. The party’s poster cautions “Fresh stylez [sic] preferred,” which we assume to mean you should put on your best ’90s fashions and prepare to dance the night away. Clinton’s Tavern (693 Bloor Street West); 10 p.m.; FREE before 11 p.m., $5 after.
YOGA: It’s Meditation Toronto’s Christmas/New Year’s Party and those who are spiritually inclined are welcome to join the group in celebrating the holiday season. There will be a vegetarian Christmas feast, and a yoga master will be there to give a lecture called “A Yogi looks at Christmas.” Admission is free, but they ask that you register so they know how much food to cook. Bloor Street United Church (300 Bloor Street West), 6–9 p.m., FREE (register here).
MUSIC: Drummers in Exile is a weekly drum circle event at the Annex Wreck Room. Every Tuesday night, everyone from the completely inexperienced novice to the Animal-esque worshipper of the skins is welcome to this community event. Bring a drum or your dancing shoes, and come prepared for a freeing, harmonious experience. Annex Wreck Room (794 Bathurst Street), 8 p.m., pay-what-you-can (suggested $2–5, 19+).
