MUSIC: Tonight at the Beaver, Gentleman Reg is throwing an advance listening party for his upcoming LP, Jet Black. The free event will also feature a screening of two music videos (shot from songs off Jet Black). If you can’t make it, you can hear Reg play the songs live when he performs at Soundscapes on Tuesday, February 24, the album’s release date. The Beaver (1192 Queen Street West), 11 p.m., FREE.
FOOD: Perhaps in an effort to compensate for that carnivore event we promoted last week, we wanted to let the vegans out there know Urban Planners care about you too. Without further ado: this evening at Kensington Market’s GlobalAware Info Shop, join the vegan, organic, fair-trade chocolatiers Boardwalk Chocolates for a chocolate party and sale. With Valentine’s Day swiftly approaching, how can you say no to this chance to stock up on choco? Did we mention there will be FREE SAMPLES? GRghnmhh! GlobalAware Info Shop (19 Kensington Avenue), 6 p.m.–9 p.m., FREE.
WORDS: Author, freelance writer, and self-proclaimed animation pimp Chris Robinson will appear in conversation with animator Ellen Besen tonight at the Gladstone Hotel to celebrate Robinson’s January 2009 release, Canadian Animation: Looking For A Place To Happen. The book follows Robinson’s year-long quest to meet Canada’s leading independent animation filmmakers and the self-reflection that took place as a result of his journey (who would have thought?). Think Fear and Loathing, except with less drugs and more drawings. And more Canada, presumably. Part of PagesThis Is Not A Reading Series. Gladstone Hotel Ballroom (1214 Queen Street West), 7 p.m., $5 (includes a $5 book rebate).
FILM: The Kevin Smith Fest continues tonight with a 7 p.m. screening of Smith’s critically acclaimed 1999 film Dogma, followed by a 10 p.m. screening of his slightly less acclaimed 2001 film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Wouldn’t it be really awesome if Jason Mewes showed up during one of Kevin Smith’s Q&As following his screenings? Man, that’d be too good to be true! Imagine if that really happened? That would definitely be a rumour we’d be willing to spread. Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor Street West), 7:00 p.m. & 9:30 p.m., $15 per screening in advance, $20 at the door.
WORDS: Bestselling Iranian author and academic Dr. Azar Nafisi will be appearing in conversation with Heather Reisman this evening at the Manulife Centre Indigo. Nafisi will also be signing books and reading from her 2008 release, Things I’ve Been Silent About: Memories. Dr. Nafisi is best known for her 2003 memoir Reading Lolita in Tehran. Indigo (55 Bloor Street West), 7 p.m., FREE.
