ART: Painter Martha Eleen has found inspiration in the fields of hydro monstrosities and big box stores that blanket the outskirts of the GTA. Her new exhibit “High Tech Towers” opens at the Cameron House tonight. While checking out her new pieces, listen to The Innards Brothers—one half of the Backstabbers Country Stringband—play their regular Wednesday after-work set. Cameron House (408 Queen Street West), 6–9 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: Roots band The Sure Things play a regular Wednesday gig every week at the Dakota Tavern. The band’s instruments include the banjo and laptop steel guitar, both wonderful hump-day instruments. Dakota Tavern (249 Ossington Avenue), $5.
COMEDY: Bad Dog Theatre specifically promises no Harold Faltermeyer references during any Wednesday Harold Night team improv. This week is the first show of 2009 and features three improv groups: Action Slacks, Beat Surrender, and Operation Burning Sky. There will also be a bonus happy-new-year set, but no promises to refrain from non-Harold ’80s references. Bad Dog Theatre (138 Danforth Avenue), 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., $5 for two shows.
MUSIC: Break up the week with a little booty-shakin’ at the Gladstone. Every Wednesday evening, guest djs and queer performers pick up the vibes for Granny Boots at the Gladstone Melody bar. Often the show is run by the Gladstone president herself, DJ Dusty Mints (a.k.a. Christina Zeidler). Gladstone Hotel Melody Bar (1214 Queen Street West), 7:30 p.m.–10 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: Abstract Thought Event Promotions presents three indie rock dance bands tonight at Sneaky Dee’s. On the bill are The Broadcast, The Metacomets, and The Accidental Heroes. Sneaky Dee’s (431 College Street), 9 p.m., $10.
