ART: Today is the last opportunity to see the work at “Hard Twist,” the Gladstone Hotel’s annual juried textile exhibit. “Twist” is the theme that binds this year’s show together, and featured artists cover ideas from sharks to Canada’s first official hangman. Gladstone Hotel, 3rd and 4th floor (1214 Queen Street West), 12–5 p.m., FREE.
DESIGN: The Danforth East Community Association launches its first store makeover today. The makeover event is a community-based initiative to improve the look of commercial properties along the Danforth. Beginning at 10 a.m., volunteer designers and marketers will be at Michael’s Meats and Deli to transform it into a refurbished deli called “The Plank Road Market.” Michael’s Meats and Deli (1810 Danforth Avenue), 10 a.m., FREE.
DANCE: The fifth anniversary of Toronto’s Original Choreographer’s Ball happens tonight at the Mod Club. The ball brings together a new set of choreographers each year, and displays a variety of contemporary genres, performed by Toronto’s finest young dancers. Besides the live dance show, there will be guest DJs to inspire non-performers to get up and dance, too. The Mod Club (722 College Street), 8 p.m., $25.
MUSIC: The WoodChopper’s Association—a large collective of who’s who from the Toronto music scene—will be playing the first Sunday of every month at the Tranzac this year. Don’t expect all two hundred or so associate members to be playing each month, but the collective (i.e. Dave Clark) does promise “live musical freak outs for you.” Tranzac (292 Brunswick Avenue), 10 p.m., pay-what-you-can ($5 suggested).
COMEDY: This week’s Laugh Sabbath is called Let’s Get Hot! The show features comedians Adam Christie, Jeremy Mersereau, Nick Flanagan, Nathan Fielder, Brian Barlow, Kathleen Phillips, Levi MacDougall, and Jon McCurley. We swear pictures from a Let’s Get Hot! show back in December 2006 show Scott Thompson performing. The Rivoli (332 Queen Street West), 8:30 p.m., $5.
