EXHIBITION: Experimental comedy performer Jon McCurley presents his new work Double Double Land Land, a co-production of the Theatre Centre and Gallery TPW (on until February 14). The exhibition is an extension of a previous one-night performance that now moves beyond traditional theatre into installation and collaborative design. Saturdays include a performance “demonstration.” The Theatre Centre (1087 Queen Street West), 12–5 p.m., FREE.
SYMPOSIUM: Vtape and University of Toronto Department of Art have teamed up to present “Luminous Bodies At Nightfall: The performance of gender” in support of the current Colin Campbell retrospective at the Oakville Galleries. The symposium examines the themes Campbell explored in queer experimental cinema. The “cabaret” is a sit-down affair, with individual presentations from Thomas Waugh, Marc Siegel, Martha Gever, and Jon Davies, each followed by a question and answer session with the audience. A bus tour to the Colin Campbell exhibit in Oakville is scheduled for next Sunday, departing from the Gladstone Hotel (January 25, 11:15 a.m., $10). ART: Crafty artists Fastwürms are today’s guests at the Power Plant’s Sunday Scene. Fastwürms (Kim Kozzi and Dai Skuse) will discuss their take on the current power plant exhibits. The Power Plant Gallery (231 Queens Quay West), 2–3 p.m., Free with gallery admission ($5).
DESIGN: Toronto architectural salvage store and gallery Smash Recoveries opens its showroom doors this weekend for a special Toronto Junction celebration. Local artist Michael Ricks is exhibiting in the showroom over the weekend, and will be dropping by from 12–3 p.m. At 6 p.m., Toronto band $100 come by to tape an intimate live set. The showroom also launches its window display contribution to IDS09 Interior Design Show, designed by Bruno Billio. Neighbouring stores Post and Beam Reclamation, Cornerstone Furniture, Forever Interiors, and Latitude 44 are also having open houses this weekend. ART: Side Space Gallery presents a group exhibition focusing on the nearby Prospect Cemetery. “Life in the Cemetery” is a multi-media group exhibit of painting and photography (on until February 20). Writer Susan Glickman will be reading from her book Running in Prospect Cemetery at 4 p.m. Side Space Gallery (1080 St. Clair Avenue West), 3–6 p.m., FREE.
