We’re Hiring
So, you may have noticed that it’s mid-January and we’re still posting articles. Which is good! There’s a lot in the works behind the scenes right now and hopefully a thing or two that we can tell you about soon, but the one thing we need to do—the one thing we started to do before we got sidetracked—is bring on a few good new people to join Torontoist’s staff. And sure, we’re always hiring, but now’s a particularly fantastic time to get involved in Torontoist.
Read on for what, and who, we’re looking for.
Writers, Artists, and Photographers
First things first.
We are looking for writers, artists, videographers, photographers, comic artists, historians, elitists, critics—whatever—to add to Torontoist’s repertoire. If you do anything totally unique that you think would fit into Torontoist, we’re happy to hear about it; if you simply want to contribute the kind of articles you see day in and day out on Torontoist and could do a stellar job of it, we want to hear about that, too.
All the information for what we’re looking for in you and what to do next is on our hiring page.
News Writers
Miss Torontoist’s daily news roundups? Us too. Posted every weekday morning on the site for years (a format later mimicked by others), Torontoist’s roundups featured a few news stories culled from other sources around the city, with a bit of snark and the occasional punchline. Here’s an example of one morning roundup that’s particularly heavy on the jokes.
Those roundups were phased out at the end of the summer with the intention of having them replaced by headless posts throughout the day as topical and relevant news happened, but that scheme never fully developed. (Headless posts are those ones we occasionally publish that have no image and that are no longer than a paragraph; right now, we post fewer than a dozen a week.) It’s about time we filled the void, though, so we’re looking for a few people who are keen on news and who can post paragraph-long articles a few times daily. Applicants for this must be rabid consumers of news and be able to be on guard throughout the day for stuff that’d be of interest to Torontoist’s readers so that we can not only post news as it happens, but we can do so in a way that’s interesting, enlightening, and entertaining. Because the headless news posts rely on content from other sources in a way that Torontoist’s other content doesn’t (the typical format for the headless posts is “summary of what’s going on” + “link to source that explains it more in full”), we’re looking for someone who can do much much more than regurgitate someone else’s news.
To apply to be a news writer for Torontoist, follow the instructions offered on our hiring page, but also send us five sample headless items—about any recent item of news, from any source (or collection of sources)—as you’d write them and as they’d appear on, and fit into, Torontoist.
Etcetera
If you don’t want to or can’t contribute to Torontoist on a regular basis, there are all sorts of other things you can do to get involved in the site: you can send amazing conversations you overhear to [email protected], send a great upcoming event you heard about to [email protected], or send us tips of any and all kinds to [email protected]. And that’s not all—there’ll be all sorts of new ways for you to get involved in Torontoist in the near future. Keep your eyes peeled.
