LECTURE: Part two of Spacing’s “The New Art of Suburbia” lecture and podcast is being presented tonight. “The Suburban Art Scene” has panelists Catherine Hernandez, Rafael Gomez, and Erika DeFreitas discussing the nature of support for the arts in the suburbs and questioning what’s required to sustain the cultural scene. Spacing associate editor Shawn Micallef moderates. Centennial College Residence and Conference Centre, Scarborough Room (940 Progress Avenue), 7 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: It’s hard enough to make it as an indie band, but Australia’s Rudely Interrupted have had more obstacles to overcome than most—autism, blindness, and Down syndrome, to name a few. Most importantly, these guys can rock. (And Def Leppard thought they had it hard with their one-armed drummer.) Rudely Interrupted are joined by Still Life Still (William New’s current favourite) and The Rural Alberta Advantage. Look for more about the band on Torontoist today. Sneaky Dee’s (431 College Street), 9 p.m., $5.
WORDS: Nothing says Christmas like a dark and stormy night at Casa Loma. Linwood Barclay, Louise Penny, Giles Blunt, and others read from their latest crime novels as part of a Crime Writers of Canada holiday Mystery Reading Series event. Casa Loma (1 Austin Terrace), 7:30 p.m., $12.
WORDS: MTV favourite Tila Tequila will be discussing her new book Hooking Up with Tila Tequila and reflecting on her experiences hosting her MTV show A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila. Be prepared to fight hordes of adolescents for her autograph. Chapters: Festival Hall (142 John Street), 7–9 p.m., FREE.
PARTY: Public: Art/Culture/Ideas is celebrating its twentieth anniversary tonight and will be digging into the archives vault for a special screening of gems from Toronto artists such as John Greyson, Lisa Steele, and Michael Snow. The birthday party is pulling double-duty as the launch of Public #37: Public? and includes music by DJ Vas and projections by Geoffrey Pugen. Lula Lounge (1585 Dundas Street West), 8 p.m., FREE.
Weekend Getaways: The Copenhagen by Andrew McAllister courtesy of Spacing.
