HOLIDAYS: The ROM has created a holiday companion for its new Earth’s Treasures gem exhibit. Special holiday activities include mining for gems, panning for gold, making diamond tiaras, and constructing scientific models of diamonds. The museum has arranged family fun on all levels of the Lee-Chin Crystal, and on New Year’s Day each adult, senior, or student admission gets one child in for free. Royal Ontario Museum, (100 Queens Park), 11 a.m.–5 p.m., $22.
MUSIC: It’s time to dance off all that turkey—or latkes, or tofurkey, or whatever. The Gladstone Ballroom hosts double-duty DJs tonight to shake off that extra booty. DJ Double AA and DJ M-Rock spin together with a four-turntable set-up. M-Rock’s World DJ Championship standing and Double AA’s fourteen-year club history in Toronto give these guys serious spinning clout. Gladstone Hotel Ballroom (1214 Queen Street West), 10 p.m., $10.
COMEDY: A double-bill at the Comedy Bar gives you the option of choosing stand-up, sketch comedy, or both. At 8 p.m., redhead hating Jimmy Hogg and guests get up to perform some self-described “quirky and hilarious” stand-up for Jimmy Hogg’s Comedy Onslaught! At 10 p.m., The Polecats take the stage for their holiday sketch show. Comedy Bar (945 Bloor Street West), 8 p.m., $10.
MUSIC: There are a few “Hotboxxx presents…” showcases happening around town this week. Their “Best of 2008” at the Opera House (735 Queen Street East, 7 p.m., $20) tonight offers up an opportunity to win some free studio time at The Chalet. However, a more interesting showcase of ready-to-be-signed Toronto indie bands is happening at the Rivoli. The line-up includes Courtney Lynn, Ryan Barwick & The Small Town Band, Elder Sister Plum, Kaleb Hikele, Rockafellers, and The Kernals. The Rivoli (332 Queen Street West), 8 p.m., $10.
