PARTIES: All eyes are on our neighbo(u)rs to the south tonight as the final showdown between red and blue brings an end to the comedic goldmine that the election campaign has been. The lovely urban-thought brewers that are Spacing Magazine are optimistically inviting Obama-supporting Torontonians to gather in Dundas Square to “Welcome Back America” once the election has been called. Dundas Square (South-east corner of Dundas and Yonge Streets), at election call, FREE.
PARTIES: NOW Magazine presents live coverage of the entire event on the big screen at the Bloor Cinema. They will be broadcasting CNN coverage, as well as The Daily Show and Colbert Report coverage. The event is being hosted by Second City alumnus Brian Smith, with commentary from NOW editors Alice Klein and Susan G. Cole. There will be a licensed area on the second floor with a cash bar. They are also awarding a prize for the best Sarah Palin look-alike. Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor Street West), 7:30 p.m., $3 (free for members).
PARTIES: The Department of Culture is inviting you to join them at the Gladstone Hotel for the Toronto part of a nation-wide election watch. Join them for a drink while watching the results roll in, in recognition of the hard work that volunteers and supporters have done to bring the centre back from the right. Their invitation acknowledges the outcome is not yet written in stone, despite what the latest polls are saying. Expect lots of table-gripping and simultaneous cheering. Gladstone Hotel Melody Bar (1214 Queen Street West), 8 p.m., FREE.
HOW-TO: Every animator in Toronto may want to stop in to tonight’s presentation of This Is Not A Reading Series. Toronto animation veterans Ellen Besen and Bryce Hallet launch their new animation tome Animation Unleashed: 100 Principles Every Animator, Comic Book Writer, Filmmaker, Video Artist, and Game Developer Should Know. Besen will be discussing what to do and what not to do, animation-wise, and will be showing clips from her own work as examples. She is joined by Bryce Hallet, who will be demonstrating a variety of animation techniques. Gladstone Hotel Ballroom (1214 Queen Street West), 7:30 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: New York City’s O’Death bring their gothic country-punk sounds to the El Mocambo tonight, sharing the bill with local Dakota Tavern regulars Elliott Brood. Think “southern gothic” along the lines of early Nick Cave. The combination of the two bands will make for a pretty interesting experience. The El Mocambo (464 Spadina Avenue), 9 p.m., $10.
