ART: When artist Tennille Will was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, she was not far from falling into the coma that would have led to her death. She credits the Diabetes Education Centre at Toronto Western Hospital with saving her life—she now knows how to control her diet and treat herself with insulin injections. Will has been raising money on behalf of the Centre through her series of Sugar Free Paintings, on exhibit this month at Shopgirls (1342 Queen Street West). She has also written a book, Sugar Free Paintings: Poems & Prescriptions. The book launches tonight, after a benefit dinner, in honour of National Diabetes Awareness Month. The Harbord Room (89 Harbord Street), 9 p.m., $10.
CHARITY: Santa in the City keeps the dream alive for not-so-lucky children by answering their wishes in letters written to Santa. Starting today, those letters will be posted on the Santa in the City web site for the good people of Toronto to answer with an anonymous gift. Donated gifts will be wrapped and delivered to the kids via Santa in time for Christmas morning. Drop-off location(s) to be announced, by donation.
MUSIC: Louisville, Kentucky hardcore band Coliseum play the El Mocambo tonight with their current tour mates, Chicago’s Minsk. Montreal’s Black Ships and Toronto’s Lullabye Arkestra are also playing. Bring ear plugs—this one’s going to be loud. El Mocambo (464 Spadina Avenue), 7 p.m. (doors open), $10.
WORDS: This Is Not A Reading Series presents Emily Holton’s double feature novellas Our Starland and Dear Canada Council and J.R. Carpenter’s Words the Dog Knows. The book launches come bundled with extras: there will be interviews, animation, author commentaries, and more. Gladstone Hotel Ballroom (1214 Queen Street West), 7:30 p.m., FREE.
Before Sleep by Tennille Will.
