Urban Planner: November 11, 2008

WORDS: This Is Not a Reading Series presents a discussion between a pair of authors whose new releases deal with two of the conundrums of modern global living. John Lorinc’s Cities: A Groundwork Guide looks at the growing urbanization of the world’s population, and Wayne Roberts’s The No Nonsense Guide to World Food examines the increasing scarcity of real food. The discussion is moderated by Amy Lavendar Harris. Gladstone Hotel, 2nd Floor Gallery (1214 Queen Street West), 7:30 p.m., $5 (book rebate).
WORDS: From a long list of the one hundred best English-language poems published in Canada in 2007, guest editor Stephanie Bolster chose the top fifty, to be published in Tightrope Books‘ new anthology series The Best Canadian Poetry in English. The series launches tonight with readings from many of the selected poets, including Jim Nason and Dani Couture. Jazz musician Fern Lindzon also performs. Revival (783 College Street West), 7 p.m., FREE.
FILM: Keep an eye out for Hellboy today, as he’s in and around the city in conjunction with the release of the Hellboy II: The Golden Army DVD. Let’s hope Ron Perlman doesn’t have to walk around all day in that red make-up. If you are planning to buy the release hot off the press, pick it up at the Yonge and Dundas Future Shop, where they are offering a double pass, with purchase, to the Silver Snail’s launch party happening tonight. The Charlotte Room (18 Charlotte Street), 8–10 p.m., by invitation.
FILM: There is a Remembrance Day double bill at the Bloor Cinema tonight, although taking in both films on the same night might be a bit challenging. Body of War (7 p.m.) is an award-winning documentary following the anti-war campaign of a returning Iraqi war veteran. The film was produced by Phil Donahue, with original music from Eddie Vedder. There is a question and answer with IVAW members after the film. At 9 p.m., there’s a screening of a 35mm print of Apocalypse Now Redux, with the full 5.1 mix sound. Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor Street West), 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., $15 (Body of War), $9 (Apocalypse Now Redux).
MUSIC: CFNY‘s Dave Bookman gives us a taste of what’s coming for NXNE 2009 (June 17–21) at his regular Tuesday “Nu Music Nite.” Topping the bill is Montreal’s super-groovy The High Dials. The event marks the opening date for band submissions to this year’s festival. The Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen Street West), 9 p.m., FREE.
