PHOTOGRAPHY: Tonight at Lennox Contemporary, join the Magenta Foundation for the launch of Flash Forward 2008, a photographic anthology showcasing up-and-coming photographers. The photos in the book were chosen from entries in the 2008 Flash Forward competition, the Magenta Foundation’s annual adjudication of emerging talent. The launch is complemented by an exhibition showcasing these photos, which will run until October 26. Lennox Contemporary (12 Ossington Avenue), 7 p.m., FREE.
MUSIC: The Department of Culture is throwing a “rock the vote”–style party tonight at the Phoenix. “This Is Not A Conservative Party” will include musical performances from Jason Collett, Friendlyness and the Human Rights, and Dave Bidini (among others), and video presentations from Alex Cuba, Ron Sexsmith, and Stars (among others). The results of the Gone In 30 Seconds national video contest will also be announced. The Phoenix Concert Theatre (410 Sherbourne Street), 8 p.m., $20.
MUSIC: There are a few other music-related events tonight. Fucked Up are playing an exclusive set this evening in the men’s washrooms at the Masonic Temple as part of MTV Live. To attend, send an e-mail to the folks at MTV (888 Yonge Street, 6 p.m., FREE). Later, over at Wrongbar, $100, Anagram, Corpusse, and Josh Reichmann/Oracle Band will play to celebrate the launch of Hunter and Cook, a new contemporary art magazine (1279 Queen Street West, 9 p.m., $10).
WORDS: Coach House Books will celebrate their 2008 fall season with a group launch tonight at Stones Place. Reading at the event will be Mike Hoolboom, Michael Blouin, Jeramy Dodds, Kyle Buckley, Margaret Christakos, and Andrew Shaver (in the place of Darren O’Donnell). There will also be a musical performance from Echo. Stones Place (1255 Queen Street West), 8 p.m., FREE.
