MUSIC: Toronto electro-punk-nintendo-beep-and-bloop duo Crystal Castles are sure to kick ass tonight at CiRCA (copyright infringement issues aside). These guys put on one hell of a show, and their hipness peak is probably approaching fast given that they’ve gone from performing in Parkdale to rocking the Harbourfront Centre and CiRCA in just eight months. So if you don’t want to wait until next year to catch them opening for Kenny Rogers at Casino Niagara, you’d better head downtown this evening. CiRCA Nightclub (126 John Street), 10 p.m., $15.
PERFORMANCE: Sexy, scary burlesque is on the menu tonight on Church Street, and we’re not just talking about the customers at Coffee Time. The Saucy Tarts and Cinnamon Hearts will be offering tricks and treats (wink-wink), with special guests Sir Pomp La Moose and Johnny Heartfelt (we’re assuming those are their real names), followed by a dance party with a costume contest featuring prizes from the Condom Shack and Cabaret Nostalgia. Goodhandy’s (120 Church Street), 9 p.m., $10–$12.
ALCOHOL: When we finally sell off our natural water supplies to the shadow government that runs the US, at least we’ll still have whisky. Ah, delicious whisky—literary fuel, marriage wrecker, social lubricant, and …festival? Yes, Whisky Live will feature discussions, vendors, classes, live music, history lessons, and whisky drinking, hooray! Convention Centre (255 Front Street West), 4–10 p.m., $50–$95.
BOO! In anticipation of Halloween, there are a lot of scary stories, haunted house walks, and spooky neighbourhood tours taking place around the city today. Unlike the whisky convention, they are all cheap and child friendly (call ahead for pre-registration): there’s a “Spirit Walk” haunted building and alleyway tour (416-392-6915, Mackenzie House [82 Bond Street], October 24–25, 6:30–7 p.m., $3–6), “Ghosts of the Garrison” tour and ghost story telling (416-392-6907, Fort York [100 Garrison Road], October 24–25, 7:30–9:30 p.m., $4.76–$9.52), “Haunted High Park” eerie storytelling and walk (416-392-6916, Colborne Lodge [Colborne Lodge Drive], October 24–31, 6:30 p.m., $5–$14), and a “Helliwell Hauntings” candlelight tour of Don Valley (416-396-2819, Todmorden Mills [67 Pottery Road], October 24, 25, 30, 7 p.m., $5–$10).
