Urban Planner: July 23, 2008

20080723urbanplanner.jpgMUSIC: Tough call on shows tonight, so here are three worth checking out: Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward’s folk duo She and Him play the Opera House with Freakwater (735 Queen Street East, doors at 8 p.m., $23.50). Dance-pop group The Black Ghosts play Wrongbar (1279 Queen Street West, doors at 9 p.m., $10). And last but not least, King Khan & the Shrines play the first of two shows at the Horseshoe Tavern, and honestly, if you aren’t going to see King Khan tonight, you should sure as hell try to see them tomorrow; it’s going to be unbelievable (370 Queen Street West, doors at 8:30 p.m., $10/$12 at door).
SALE: By the time you read this, it will be too late. Too late to get there early for the massive giveaway at the Sony Centre, that is! The centre will be giving away a ton of free, somewhat useless items (ever wanted your own gurney?). The sale goes until 2 p.m., and a full list of free items is available on their website. Sony Centre for the Performing Arts (1 Front Street East), until 2 p.m. this afternoon.
BOOK LAUNCH: Kingi Carpenter (owner of popular silk-screening store Peach Berserk) is releasing her new how-to book and DVD set called Silkscreen NOW. In celebration, there will be a launch party tonight at the Gladstone Hotel. The event features a performance art piece on silk-screening, a fashion show, and hand-printed giveaways. You can even bring your own shirt and get it silk-screened for you during the party! The book/DVD set (which comes in its own handprinted tote bag) will be available for $39.95, with $5 going towards the Stephen Lewis Foundation (in support of HIV/AIDS relief in Africa). Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen Street West), 7 p.m., FREE.
BENEFIT: A group of families affected by Multiple Sclerosis are climbing Machu Picchu in order to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. To help them reach their $150,000.00 goal, a Casino Royale–style gala is being held at the Peridot Resto Lounge tonight. There will be gambling tables, a 50/50 draw, and a silent auction. If you can’t make it but want to donate, you can do so online. Perido Resto Lounge (81 Bloor Street East), doors at 7 p.m., $30.
