Nobody’s Perfect
When you’re feeling the need to flip through a comic, but good and clean Calvin & Hobbes won’t curb your controversial cravings, and Manga shows off more than you bargained for—worry not, we’ve all been there. And after years of pursuit of the perfect graphic saga, we’ve finally come across a strip with the just the right amount of moral compromise.
Jesus: The Awkard Years is the web comic started last year by a couple of heathens, Chris Henderson and Matt Burke. It all began once upon a time when four gospel writers came and ripped off the duo’s idea about a magical Mexican boy named Jesus. The only way for revenge? Ripping the Bible boys back off, with parodies of all their good gospel fun. Except that somehow, Chris and Matt’s satire involves a pizza-faced, crackly-voiced, mid-pubescent miracle teen with all the troubles of the high school daze—sometime between B.C. and A.D. With a full set of characters ranging from Joseph Christ to Mary Magdalene, we warn you that few jokes are left un-made, and few lines are left un-crossed (including crucifixion taboos), so read at your own risk.
And to exalt the shock level a little higher, infidels, pagans, and atheists alike are invited to come indulge in some mass heathenism with gluttonous amounts of beer on the cheap (and on the tap) at Toby’s at the official comic launch tonight. Look for a special-edition comic with the familiar-sounding name “How Mary Met Joseph.” Expect ass-inine jokes about all of Jesus’s barnyard Bethlehemite buddies (especially the donkey), and a whole lot of awkward moments. If you’re afraid your minister might catch you, or have other sinful Wednesday-night commitments (and we know there are many), the comics are released on-line every week—when else?—on Sunday morning.
