The Rump Shaker: June 19–25

One of history’s greatest voices will be serenading the Sony Centre tonight as Al Green kicks off the Downtown Jazz Festival. After taking a very long break, The Reverend has been busy in the past few years. He recruited ?uestlove of The Roots for help on the just released Lay It Down. Although there will be plenty of new songs, we hope that Green struts his stuff on classics like “Here I Am (Come And Take Me)” the way he did on Soul Train back in the day. Saskatchewan’s Dione Taylor opens the show.
Bring your dancing shoes and your best Cockney accent to Sneaky Dee’s Saturday night for Davy Love’s Retirement Party. The man behind the Brit pop institution Blow-Up is bidding adieu to DJing as he approaches his 40th birthday. While indie rock nights may seem a dime a dozen in a spit that has a venue called The Mod Club, Blow-Up was the only game in town for a long, long time. Love will also be leaving the city soon to pursue some learning. So check out his extended set, as this is one time where you shouldn’t hang the DJ.
It’s time to get intimate with 50 Cent and G-Unit as they perform a show at downtown megaclub CiRCA on Sunday. Fiddy is currently involved in a bit of a tiff with ex G-Unit soldier Young Buck, which escalated after 50 released a taped phone conversation of Buck pleading to remain with G-Unit. That’s some Henry Kissinger shit.
