Populist: April 28–May 4
We publish a lot of articles on Torontoist, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up. Populist is a weekly recap, appearing every Sunday night, that features some of the coolest, most interesting, most commented, and most recommended posts from our past week.

- Val Dodge discovered some ISBN graffiti on the Humber Bay Arch Bridge, a big looser (this week’s most commented-on post), and GO-by-Bike.
- David Topping wrote about a potential TTC riders’ union (this week’s most recommended post), and retold the stories of two devastated Torontoist readers’ trips to Ben and Jerry’s.
- Jonathan Goldsbie wrote about the problems of branding a subway station; and wrote about how Astral won the street furniture contract by throwing money at the city, and how that might post a problem if that money turns out to only be hypothetical rather than actual.
- Miles Storey caught High Park’s gorgeous cherry blossoms, and spotted Howard Moscoe checking out a brand new EcoCab. Previously covered by Maneesh Mohindra, the cabs are on streets now and are perfect for people who hate the healthiness of biking, the quickness of cars, and the dignity of walking.
- Marc Lostracco wrote about an adorable dog fountain in honour of Norman Jewison’s dog, Barney; Toronto Hydro’s free clothesline promotion; and oh my god the iPhone is coming to Canada and Rogers is for sure doing it, and it’s actually been surprisingly easy so far for iPhone envy to overcome Rogers resentment.
- Karen Whaley presented a nice big guide to CONTACT, the month-long photography fest taking over the city. We’ll have more in the weeks to come.
- Maneesh Mohindra gently skewered an out-of-towner trying to coax people into checking out Toronto’s finest sights: Rod Stewart at Sassafraz! Winners! Tim Hortons “Cafés”! Such a tourist trap, our city.
- Andrew Pulsifer covered the launch of GTA IV, the game that at least one person you know has not barely stopped playing since Wednesday.
- Readers’ favourite photo of the past week (by recommends) was Wednesday’s candid shot of a singalong on Queen West, by Taylor Zhou.
- In columns this week, David Topping and Miles Storey introduced Tourist with Moscow, Merzouga, and Turku kicking off the trip. There were also new editions of Vandalist (undead children), Saverist (gas), Historicist (Edward VIII), The Great Torontoist Challenge (slushies), Torontoist vs. Torontoist (the proper role of the Ontario Human Rights Commission), Vintage Toronto Ads (Prince Hotel), Portrait Project (David Onley), Snappy Answers (private karaoke), Povertyville (neighbours!), and Illustration Sunday (Jane Jacobs).
