Toronto Fucks Up Radiohead
On April 1, Radiohead asked their fans to remix “Nude,” one of the tracks from 2007’s In Rainbows. Fans could buy any or all of the five “stems” of the song (voice, guitar, bass, strings/FX, or drums), create a version of their own, and upload it to radioheadremix.com.
Two weeks later, and Toronto’s own Holy Fuck sit comfortably on top of the 1,800 other mixes on the fan-voted list; Todor Kobakov—who has done string arrangements for Stars and Emily Haines, composed film scores for flicks like Young People Fucking and who NOW picked as the city’s best keyboardist last year—is at #25; and Justin Small, Ohad Benchetrit, and Charles Spearin (all members of Do Make Say Think, and the latter two are members of Broken Social Scene) are further back, at #86.
The three mixes couldn’t be more different (at least as far as remixes of the same track go): Holy Fuck shoves a thick beat on top of it, Kobakov ditches everything but vocals and adds the work of the Tokai String Quartet, and Do Make Say Think sound…well, a lot like Do Make Say Think.
Voting ends May 1. At the very least, you don’t want to miss the Hipster Runoff remix, which expertly uses the form of the “Nude” remix to parody the exercise of Radiohead fandom.
