The Rump Shaker: April 24–30

It’s a night of east coast hip hop at the Danforth Music Hall on Friday. Acclaimed party-rocking DJ Skratch Bastid will be manning the decks first as an opening act and then accompanying Buck 65, who headlines the night. The Halifax-raised DJ is well-known for his Imperial Death March beat juggling routine and is an accomplished turntablist. Recently, he laced Buck 65’s latest album Situation, which has produced a video for “Dang!” The two will be joined by Edmonton’s finest, Cadence Weapon, who recently dropped his critically acclaimed sophomore album Afterparty Babies.
Cozy and showcasing some of the city’s best DJing talent, Footwork rings in its third year anniversary this weekend. Friday is the warm up as resident DJs Sydney Blu, The Roaches, Vinyl Junkies, and more will be manning the decks for the club’s weekly Rehab night. Saturday is the official birthday date and Chicago house DJ, Green Velvet will be in town to get the party going. While he may be a born again Christian, it doesn’t mean that Green Velvet has forsaken the sweet ecstasy that comes with rocking a dancefloor.
Fresh off her American stage debut at the intimate party known as Coachella, French singer/songwriter/rapper Yelle will be rocking The Opera House on Wednesday. While the vast majority of the audience won’t understand her French lyrics (shame on us!), her infectious beats and energy will more than make up for it. Her single, “Je Veux Te Voir” is not only crazy catchy but is apparently a diss to French rapper Cuizinier and was originally called “Short Dick Cuizi.” Fuck; that’s gangster!
