Musicologist: April 21–27

2008_04_21peter_moren.jpgSummer’s concert season is well on its way, folks! This week a handful of exciting dates were announced, including Montreal’s orchestral pop collective Islands, who play on May 29 at the Phoenix, Retribution Gospel Choir (side project for Alan Sparhawk of Low), who will be at the Rivoli on June 21, and West Coast experimental veterans Frog Eyes, who play at the Horseshoe on June 23—get your tickets early!
As for this week, young folk Peter Moren (of Peter Bjorn and John) will be playing El Mocambo on Thursday, April 24. The Swedish musician kick-started this month with the release of his first solo album, The Last Tycoon, an odd move post-Writer’s Block buzz. But don’t show up on Thursday with hopes of synth-ridden pop anthems—Moren’s solo work is far more comparable to fellow Swede Jose Gonzales, focusing more on confessional folk stories than AT&T commercial narratives. Feeling over-zealous? Catch Moren before the El Mocambo show at Soundscapes at 4 p.m.—the in-store performance is free, so you may as well.
