Populist: April 14–20
We publish a lot of articles on Torontoist, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up. Populist is a weekly recap, appearing every Sunday night, that features some of the coolest, most interesting, most commented, and most recommended posts from our past week.
- What has been coming to a head for a month has miraculously been remedied: earlier today, Bob Kinnear announced that the TTC will not be on strike. Torontoist provided coverage throughout Saturday night and into Sunday with our constantly-updated TTC Strike Status post, while Jonathan Goldsbie discovered a taped plea to the union. Torontoist’s coverage will continue as news arrives.
- Val Dodge found a big sign of rules at Sunnybrook Park. If you plan to head to Toronto’s parks, do be cautious if you plan to take photos, especially if those photos are of unlicensed frisbeeing. (This week’s most commented-on post.)
- David Topping tried to unpack the messy relationship between Crystal Castles and artist Trevor Brown, who created an image of Madonna with a black eye that the band had used for two years; and tried to get help from Torontoist readership to figure out a new name for OCAD that is less awkward than “OCAD University.”
- Posterchild wrote about cartoonist John Martz’s latest great project: redrawn portraits of everyone in his mother’s 1968 high school yearbook. Now we want one for our own yearbooks.
- Robin Rix broke down the Information and Privacy Commissioner’s decision in favour of Rami Tabello and IllegalSigns.ca, after the city’s Corporate Access and Privacy Unit deemed Tabello’s latest requests for information “frivolous or vexatious.”
- Patrick Metzger wrote about the curious fate of Loblaws’ newly-missing “s.” It will be sorely missed, but hey, at least the chain is finally offering “great food.”
- Andrew Chin interviewed Chris Turner, Globe and Mail staffer and audacious author of The Geography of Hope: A Tour of the World We Need.
- Dory Carr-Harris wrote about Out From Under at the ROM, and pondered the fate of the Gardiner.
- Readers’ favourite photo of the past week (by recommends) was Wednesday’s photo of a woman walking outside Sassafraz in Yorkville, by Taylor Zhou.
- In columns this week, Jamie Bradburn introduced Historicist, a new weekly column about—surprise!—Toronto’s history, with a look at the Telegram. There were also new editions of Wild Toronto (maples vs. maples; this week’s most recommended post); Vintage Toronto Ads (how making boring soup is worse than being beaten for a 1950s wife); Great Torontoist Challenge (water); Vandalist (the fine art of bridge-tagging); Streeter (great eggspectations); Illustration Sunday (clothes hangers); Snappy Answers (eatin’); Drop the Needle (Luu Breeze); Who, What, Wear (69 Vintage’s by-the-pound sale); Portrait Project (strikes n’ ‘staches).
