Musicologist: March 17–23

2008_03_17singleaf.jpg This week Musicologist wants you to meet Sing Leaf. This orchestral/experimental-folk sextet combines intricate pieces of woven sounds ranging from airy flute to a reversed loop of acoustic guitar to sparse banjo overtop of minimalist electronic bases. Their sound is warm and sincere, and offers promising comparisons to many of the ripened initiatives in similar genres (Yo La Tengo’s And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out, for example). Sing Leaf play at a much-anticipated Beach House show on March 28 at El Mocambo—tickets are $8.50.
As of late, it is becoming quite accurate to describe Toronto as a hub for experimental musicians. Both the Tranzac and the Music Gallery (and the series that operate within these venues) are two of the many venues that have steady commitments to showcasing exciting experimental projects that push to mold fresh sounds and re-invent genres. Record stores name many of these local experimental releases some of the best for the year (Soundscapes spoke highly of Timbre Timbre’s Medicinals in 2007), local labels snatch them up whole-heartedly (Eric Warner’s We Are Busy Bodies has just released Andre Charles Theriault’s first full-length), and when Spin Magazine recently did a feature on Toronto as a musical nucleus, Sandro Perri and the Tranzac were featured. Sing Leaf joins this rich community of experimental musicians that continues to shape what is coming to be, another one of the many strengths this city has as a musical centre.
