Musicologist: March 10–16
Torontoist is ahead of the game for previewing some of the best music choices this week (Queen West fire benefit, Forest City Lovers’ CD release) but Musicologist will give you one more recommendation—just for kicks.
When UK’s Field Music announced a (begrudged) break last year, who knew David Brewis would be in Toronto playing a show under a different name and clean ethos so quickly? School of Language and their debut LP Sea From Shore can aptly be labelled progressive pop—vocal hooks, infectious rhythm, cycled guitar riffs, and attention-grabbing production all pieced in structural unpredictability.
Brewis’s voice has a warm, quirk sensibility that at times offers a mild resemblance to David Byrne. Experimentation with unique harmonies (think Dirty Projectors) and a vocal cameo for Futurehead’s David Craig both speak to the value of vocals for this side project.
With a sound so fresh and promising, it’s too bad their Toronto stop on their North American tour is the only Canadian one. Brewis and accompaniment Doug McCombs (Tortoise) and Ryan Rapsys (Euphone) will be playing Sneaky Dee’s on Wednesday, March 12 with Toronto’s The I Spies for $8—should be a good one!
