Populist: March 17–23
We publish a lot of articles on Torontoist, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up. Populist is a weekly recap, appearing every Sunday night, that features some of the coolest, most interesting, most commented, and most recommended posts from our past week.
- Marc Lostracco wrote about the shameful, shameful past of Jarvis Street, and the slight hope there is for its future (this week’s most recommended post).
- Jonathan Goldsbie discovered a “skin-brightening” ad on the subway tampered to promise not just white skin but white power. But it’s okay, because white people are totally more attractive anyway, says a U of T researcher!
- Patrick Metzger wrote about the Great Stork Derby, a half-million dollar prize offered by a rich guy to the woman who gave birth to the most kids in the ten years after his death. Ah, the good old days.
- Karen Whaley wrote about Robert Bateman, who issued a video that if you watch with the sound off really looks like he has beef with some guy’s crappy painting of Orcas. Whaley also revealed that Michael Cera will play Scott Pilgrim—sorry to disappoint, former Torontoist Editor Joshua Errett!
- Todd Aalgaard wrote about last weekend’s anti-war protest, with photos by Miles Storey (this week’s most commented-on post).
- David Topping wrote about a student protest that got ugly. A follow-up protest is planned for Tuesday, along with an anti-protest protest.
- Jaime Woo checked out the potential new designs for the Revue’s façade.
- Miles Storey snuck a peek at the rubble left after the Queen West fire, as Val Dodge broke the news of Duke’s new home.
- Stephen Johns featured video of Vesa Toskola letting in a really, really embarrassing goal. Even if you hate hockey—especially if you hate hockey—you will love this video.
- John Beebe featured his photos from Good Friday’s Little Italy procession.
- Mathew Katz gave props to the CBC for releasing one show—just one—for free via BitTorrent. Where were these bright ideas when we were on Test the Nation?
- Sarah Nicole Prickett had coverage of Fashion Week all (fashion) week!
- Andrew Chin interviewed Maestro Fresh Wes Williams.
- Readers’ favourite photo of the past week (by recommends) was Monday’s shot of Darth Vader enjoying an Eye on Alberta ski-hills, by dzgnboy.
- In columns this week, there were new editions of Great Torontoist Challenge (Red Bean Buns!), Vintage Toronto Ads (the Welcome Wagon), Povertyville (signs!), Vandalist (advertising isors), Portrait Project (Clark, the Avocado Man), Illustration Sunday (Easter), and Snappy Answers (well, not really!). As well, there was a very special final edition of Campaign Confidential.
