Populist: January 28–February 3
We publish a lot of articles on Torontoist, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up. Populist is a weekly recap, appearing every Sunday night, that features some of the coolest, most interesting, most commented, and most recommended posts from our past week.

- Rosemary Mosco’s Wild Toronto explored the wonderful world of pigeons, gorgeous rats of the sky! (This week’s most recommended post.)
- Marc Lostracco continued Torontoist’s Jarvis Slip coverage with the announcement of the winners: those architects who really like coloured umbrellas! He also wrote about Ryerson University’s new building (for people who really like glass––this week’s most commented-on post), and Sony’s dumbassed new music cards (for people who really like having one extra step between them and music they like).
- Maneesh Mohindra wrote about the government of Australia deeming Canada a scary, scary place, where, in addition to the danger of terrorist attack and pick-pocketing, its website cautions travelers to “be aware that local laws and penalties, including ones that appear harsh by Australian standards, do apply to you.” We are super-curious as to what those ultra-harsh local laws and penalties are.
- This week’s Vandalist featured a beautiful and hopeful play on birds on a wire outside a school.
- Miles Storey had lovely photos this week of the big snowfall, and covered two WinterCity events: Cie Carabosse’s fire sculptures, and some Flying Canucks acrobatics.
- Kevin Plummer wrote about a study seeking to answer the commuter’s dilemma: at a bus or streetcar shelter, should you wait around, or start walking?
- Jaime Woo wrote about Renda Abdo’s vision for her nightclub, Straight.
- Dillon McManamy checked out the Toronto Public Space Committee’s “Art Attack,” which covered ads at a streetcar shelter with…well, not “art,” but something like it.
- Readers’ favourite photo of the past week (by recommends) was Thursday’s photo of St. George station swamped with commuters, by diffract.
