Musicologist: January 28–February 3

2008_01_28waynepetti.jpgMost should be very excited by the wide gamut of shows announced this week; Musicologist is excited, but distracted by the concept of a $30.75 Hedley ticket. But yes, excitement: Rick White and The Luyas (one third Jessie Stein of Miracle Fortress and SS Cardiacs, two thirds Bell Orchestre’s Pietro Amato and Stefan Schneider) play the Music Gallery on February 9. Gogol Bordello returns on March 2, shortly after their over-the-top performance last October. New York’s Vampire Weekend evidently can’t get enough of Toronto coming back for the third time since last summer on February 11. Basia Bulat (with Musicologist-loving Katie Stelmanis) is headlining her own show after a heavy North American, Hayden-supporting tour on March 29. Finally, Thee Silver Mt. Zion play on June 7 and 8 as per their (sometimes) annual Toronto visit—sadly, both shows will be Patti Smith-less.
While waiting for that pile of great shows to trickle in within the next couple of months, be happy to know that this week’s selection of shows isn’t as dull as previous weeks. Highly recommended is Ban-Aid, an event held on Thursday, January 31 at The Drake by NaturoPack, a Toronto-based not-for-profit organization that engages in both spreading awareness and advocating for the use of environmentally responsible packaging. NaturoPack will be kicking styrofoam to the curb with local loves Cuff the Duke, Sunparlour Players, and Jewish Legend for what is definitely a worthy cause. While the issue of lurking styrofoam in Toronto always reeks with importance, this fundraiser seems that much more timely with the closing of Canada’s last polystyrene recycling plant in December of 2007. Cost of the event is $20, and for the great bands, a great cause, and a great time (last year’s fundraiser was a hit), this is definitely the most attractive music listing this week.
