Feist Wins

An excuse to post Feist’s “1234”? Yes, please.
In October, i (heart) music asked 30 music bloggers across the country––Torontoist included––to rank the 10 hottest Canadian bands in 2007. What defined “hottest” was up to each panelist to decide; we figured it meant “rank good bands by their popularity,” and voted accordingly. One month later, with 150 bands receiving nominations, i (heart) music announced the top 33, with Feist edging out the Arcade Fire by just one point for the top spot.
If last year’s list belonged to Toronto, this year’s is certainly Montreal’s: the city has twelve bands that call it home (and seven of the first twelve), while we’ve only got nine on the list, plus a handful of stragglers from places that kinda maybe count as Toronto, like Dundas and Hamilton. It doesn’t help that some of the biggest local names from last year’s list––the top-placing Final Fantasy, Broken Social Scene, Born Ruffians, Metric, to name just a few––all failed to place this year, probably because the voting Montreal bloggers were all grumpy about being beaten so handily last year. Next year, maybe? Your city needs you, Mr. Pallett.
The full list is after the jump, or you can hop on over to i (heart) music to see the list with commentary from the “esteemed” panelists. Hey, we’re esteemed!
