Even though Brooklyn has been part of New York since 1898, the calibre of talent that comes out of there these days almost makes it seem like a separate city again (and if it were, it would be the same size as Toronto!). Tonight, Brooklyn-based Project Jenny, Project Jan are performing at our very own Horseshoe Tavern for the Toronto stop of their tour, which has already taken them to Philly, Boston and Montreal. Joining them on the tour are Brighton-based electronica legends Fujiya & Miyagi.
Project Jenny, Project Jan is described as a mashup between Aphex Twin and Basement Jaxx, while Billboard called the pair a “shockingly dynamic, danceable and hilarious affair.” Don’t take their word for it, though: you can listen to the band music on their website and MySpace. This tour marks the release of the band’s new LP, XOXOXOXOXO. After gaining attention by offering their debut album free online, our sister site Gothamist proclaimed, “This is a band that should be taken seriously, even while singing about homemade sex tapes and the Chinatown bus.”
Fujiya & Miyagi, who hail from Fatboy Slim’s favourite stomping grounds, are a trio who need no introduction. With their dancy, cheery chiptune-inspired riffs and almost whispered vocals, it was definitely worth the trip over the pond. You can hear their music on their website and MySpace.
Doors open tonight at the Horseshoe Tavern at 8 p.m.; show begins at 9 p.m.
