Celebrating City Idol

It’s been over a year since local &#252ber-activist Dave Meslin took his grass roots political activism to the next level by co-ordinating the City Idol competition.
Rather than entering the municipal election himself, Meslin chose to direct his efforts at increasing civic participation in the terminally under-attended municipal elections. Aside from some minor bumps (including having to change the logo, lest he infringe upon the rights of Ryan Seacrest, et al) the effort yielded succesful results, fielding four enthusiastic candidates last November.
On Thursday and Sunday, those involved will have some time to reflect with the screening of a documentary celebrating their achievements at the Royal Cinema at 9 p.m. Directed by Arturo Perez Torres, and featuring music by Bob Wiseman, City Idol: The Documentary will be holding its world premiere as part of the Hot Docs festival so you have to get your tickets through them.
If that’s not enough democracy-themed fun for you, your weekend won’t be complete unless you also attend the Saturday night reunion celebration taking place at Plaza Flamingo on College Street. The party kicks off at 9 p.m. and a $9 cover will help with fundraising efforts. Trampoline Lectures host Misha Glouberman will MC while music will be provided by The New Kings and DJ [email protected].
