The Daily Photoist: Pinch? pinch? pinch? NO PINCH! NO PINCH! NO PINCH!

We’re experimenting with a new daily photo posting. Each weekday morning, we’ll pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It’s our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!

We intentionally left this photo by Robannz (Marc Robin) out of the weekly roundup so we could feature it here in The Daily Photoist. There’s great textures and colours here — especially the way the red and blue just pop off the page. And the human pincer hand is funny. It made us think of the head-crushing character from Kids in the Hall. And then we went off and watched Kids in the Hall DVDs all night and didn’t do any Christmas shopping like we were supposed to. So thanks a lot Robannz — for ruining Christmas!
Actually, the opposite was true. This photo, for being so focused on one small detail, wonderfully evokes a stroll along Spadina through Chinatown, and that, in turn, reminded us of our yearly tradition of eating Dim Sum on Christmas morning. (One year, a Christmas Day snowstorm liberated us from our family obligations and we found ourselves stuck in the city with no food in the fridge. Spending Christmas eating Dim Sum was such a treat we vowed to make it an annual event.)
The fact is, for lots of people in the city who don’t believe in Santa, December 25th will pass not much different from any other day. Whether you plan on spending the 25th at home, going to the movies, or eating crab at your favourite Dim Sum restaurant, pass it merrily.
