Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Torontoist + Flickr

Since it launched over the summer, our Torontoist Flickr Pool has quickly grown; after only five months, we’ve got just under 500 members and 4,000 photos in the pool. But there are a few cool things (and some changes) that we thought that members and regular Torontoist readers alike might not know about. Like maps! And copyright! And how to get really, really famous!

Maps! Flickr’s recently-launched feature means that you can see a map of where many of the shots in our group were taken. Go explore the area where you live, check out your favourite spots in the city, and watch for new photos from some of the city’s best photographers. Remember to sleep, eventually; it can get pretty addictive. Members, be sure to use Flickr’s new geotag feature to get your shots on the map!

Subscribe! If you use RSS (?), you can subscribe to the photos in the Torontoist + Flickr group with our photo feed using your favorite aggregator. You’ll never miss a single shot. You can subscribe to other groups by clicking the little orange logo at the bottom of their pages. If you’ve been putting off subscribing to Torontoist’s main RSS feed for our entries, now’s a good excuse to add it too.

Share! Many users have embraced Creative Commons, a kind of alternative copyright. As a result, most of the photos in our group are licensed for use in all sorts of cool ways free of charge, and you can start using some of the gorgeous shots for your own Toronto-related projects (just make sure that you know all the conditions of how it works).

Post More! The monthly photo limit has been tripled from 20 to 60 photos, which means that now you can show off three times as much. We like show-offs.
Get Famous! The Flickr group is a great way to get your photos seen by Torontoist’s visitors. We use photos from the group for all sorts of reasons, whether it’s in our weekly collection of shots posted every Saturday, our daily news roundups, certain posts that we need a great image for, or, in some cases, just to simply feature a particularly incredible shot. We always give credit to the photographer and we always link back to the shot if we use it.
Get Really Famous! If you’ve just submitted some particularly newsworthy photos, send a quick email to [email protected] so that we can feature them on the site ASAP.
Accessorize! If you use Firefox and have Greasemonkey installed, don’t forget that there’s a whole plethora of scripts available to make your Flickr experience even better (like adding a link in groups to show all images by any user in our pool, for one). It’s the online equivalent of the BeDazzler.
If you’re a photographer and you haven’t joined our group yet, now’s as good a time as any! Check it out.
