Graf + Debating + Patios + Music = Resurface
When public debates flare up over whether graffiti is art or vandalism, the heat they generate doesn’t even come close to that of the fires that rage within the culture itself over whether art on legal walls, painted in a graffiti style is “real” graffiti. The one thing graffiti opponents and practitioners seem to agree on is the defining element of risk and illegality that is central to the art and act we call graf.
But sometimes it can be fun for everyone to take a break from all the running and tagging to step back and see the styles that germinate under pressure flourish with the luxury of time afforded by legal conditions. With ReSurface, Style In Progress puts this community-building, alley-beautifying aspect of graffiti on public display every June, pairing it with a full day of great music and patio chill.
The fun starts tomorrow, Saturday June 3rd, at 11am, with Deejays Phat Khat, Phat Tony and Cheeba spinning on the patio at the Drake Hotel and artists painting in the alleys behind it. After a brief siesta from 7-9pm, the party returns at the Drake Underground with short sets by emcees JD Era, Rich London, More Or Les, sickSOUNDsyndrome & Sweet Touch Foundation.
The great debate resumes on Sunday at 11am with the Graffiti is Art Seminar.
