Hey, remember when you were a little kid and your parents would take you to the library every Saturday morning for storytime, and the air was just buzzing with energy and noisy kids but as soon as the storyteller started to speak everyone magically shut up? And even if you don’t, don’t you wish you did because it sounds like such a lovely memory? Yeah. Well, you’re in luck, because Speak! is here to fill the narrative void in your weekend.
Created and curated every other week by the talented trio of Lisa Pijuan-Nomura (the dynamo behind the bi-monthly Red at the Lula Lounge, Noah Kenneally (puppeteer extraordinaire and all ’round mensch), and Ann McDougall (storytelling diva, Canadian history maven, and TOist’s own recipe guru), Speak! seeks to fill the storytelling hole in the lives of modern adults (though they occasionally host an event aimed at children, the Speak! folks generally showcase storytellers whose work is aimed at grown-ups). Speak! also aims to foster storytelling in the community – after the performers (there are three at every event) do their thing, the floor is opened up for a storytelling jam, where anyone can jump in with a good story.
The event this Sunday (April 9th) will be the last one for awhile (they’re going on hiatus for the summer), so get your story-seeking butt down to the Distillery on Sunday afternoon!
Sunday, April 9th, 4 pm. Distillery District, Case Goods Building, 4th Floor, Studio 409. $5-$10.
