Ryerson’s Ernie the Hot Dog Vendor Hangs Up the Tongs
The Eyeopener The Ryersonian broke the story that Ernie the Hot Dog Vendor is calling it quits. The moustachioed sausage slinger has been a fixture at Ryerson for over 25 years and won the hearts and stomachs of many hungry students through initiatives like a bursary day that has helped out dozens of students.
The former engineer has made sure that the bursaries will keep going, he’s already raised $21,000 to go towards a fund that’ll keep giving to the students he’s fed for so long. For his third act Ernie is trying to take on the theatre. He’s apparently writing a musical.
“You’re familiar with Damon Runyon, a writer whose beat was Times Square in New York? Well, we’ve written a play about Dundas Square and characters around our corner,” he said to the Star. A hot dog vendor that name drops Guys and Dolls writer Damon Runyon, how cool is that?
