Not Your Average Robe
Torontoist visited Magic Pony (694 Queen St. W.) for the opening of Mamechiyo: the Art of Kimono. Mamechiyo is a Tokyo-based designer whose work focuses on tranditional meets contemporary dress. This show is her first solo exhibition in North America and first appearance in Canada.
While snacking on edamame in the crowded space, we viewed the installation among the Japanese women sporting Mamechiyo’s kimonos. Visit Magic Pony to see the colourful kimonos and stylish footwear displayed alongside whimsical photocollages and simpler photos depicting women in the Japanese dress. The photocollages were our favourite pieces as retro, futuristic, and garden scenes brought time, place, and space to the world of kimono-wearing women and dolls. Regardless of this exhibit, which is a bonus treat until April 3rd, visit Magic Pony for a most fabulous collection of creature art, available in sizes small to big.
