Moon-Watching on the Island
Get ready to watch the skies tonight as the Moon crosses through the Earth’s outer perimeter shadow (penumbra). The Moon will appear to be dimmed during this penumbral lunar eclipse, which is only one of five such cases happening during the 21st Century. In honour of this event, the Toronto School of Creativity & Inquiry is inviting you to celebrate on Ward’s Island Beach.
The schedule for March 14th is as follows:
5:15pm Arrive at the Toronto Ferry Docks (located at the foot of Bay Street and Queens Quay, just West of the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel). Meet at pay wickets outside the terminal.
5:22pm First Contact (the instant when the Moon starts to enter into the Earth’s umbra; the moment we make contact)
5:30pm Catch ferry and depart city for Ward’s Island
7:48pm Greatest Eclipse (at this instant, the Moon will stand midway in the penumbral shadow; we will momentarily stand between the city and the Moon)
10:00pm Catch ferry at Ward’s Island and return to city
10:14pm Last Contact (the instant when the Moon clears the Earth’s
umbra completely)
If you happen to miss the boat to the Island, do not fret! Hop aboard another ferry and meet the group on the Island for the celebration. Bring binoculars, telescopes, and snacks and join in on the fun of this astronomical phenomenon!
