Michael Geist and Copyrightwrong

2006_3_30geist.gifCopyright isn’t exactly a sexy topic, there’s no blood, no one dies, there are no burnt out houses or flooded streets to get people riled up. Or is it? Bloggers were able to get a lot of people angry over Sam Bulte when she apparently cozied up to record industry bigwigs at a Drake Hotel fundraiser. And with the Junos (or the Canadian Idol reunion) coming up and the RIAA going crazy down south there’s a lot at stake with copyright. And with all those musicians crying poor maybe it is sexier than we thought.
It’s sexy enough that Professor Michael Geist’s Hart House lecture tonight is sold out. Geist has tackled the legal wild west that is the internet with aplomb. He’s drafted legal policy on spam, and is an expert on copyright and why that system, created more than a century ago is broken and protects entrenched interests at the cost of creativity and innovation at the least and infringes on civil liberties at the worst. Wow, makes you want to go, huh? The lecture is at Hart House 7:30 pm. There’s a rush line so get there early or because this is the 21st century watch the webcast.
