Don’t Get Rid of Maisonneuve Mediascout

2006_3_1maisonneuve.jpgTorontoist is well aware that Maisonneuve magazine is out of Montreal, the editors seem to love rubbing that in our Toronto noses. But because they’re sooo stylish, smart and funny we forgive ’em for it. Well changes are afoot for the President’s Medal winning mag.
Maisonneuve is moving away from its general-interest, Harper’s/New Yorker for the under-35 set beat and refashioning itself as a Montreal city mag starting this Fall. We have mixed feelings about this. Frankly we’re in love with the mag’s story selection, it’s unique view on world events and the fact that they have a great stable of bloggers.
One of the things that we hope isn’t sacrificed is Mediascout, the mag’s daily e-mail analysis of Canada’s news. Mediascout, to Torontoist, is like that morning cup of coffee. Something is missing when we start our days without it. Unlike our friends with day jobs at real newsrooms we can’t afford subscriptions to “the big six” (what Mediascout calls the six dailys they use to make up their digests). Also we find that more often than not the Mediascout team’s analysis is dead-on and hard to find elsewhere.
So, get rid of the witty front of book articles, turf the well-written features on world events, we’ll live. Torontoist’s stack of magazines will keep him going. But if anybody at the Maisonneuve offices is reading this, please keep Mediascout. Don’t let a good thing die.
