Degrassi Kids Looking Pretty Good for 100…

Admit it. You didn’t think Degrassi: The Next Generation would ever last past its first season, let alone celebrate its 100th episode, as it did last night on CTV.
With Degrassi: TNG’s sixth season now in talks, the modern teenage melodrama threatens to grossly outperform the original Degrassi series, which ran for only 42 episodes over five seasons. Call us old fashioned, but we don’t believe Degrassi: TNG will ever surpass Degrassi Junior High in quality. The popularity of the new series relies on the universe (or Degrassiverse, to fans) built by Degrassi Junior High. Its frank and honest approach to dealing with adolescent problems transformed it from low-budget Canadian production to cult favorite to international phenomenon, which gave Degrassi: TNG a fanbase from Day 1. And besides, Pat Mastroianni looked better with the hat.
An article in Monday’s Toronto Star reports that Degrassi: TNG is drawing U.S. networks, and director Kevin Smith may even make a Degrassi movie. Which leaves us with only one question: aren’t we about due for a Ready or Not reunion?
