Torontoist Eats: The Greekest

astoria.gifThe best Chinese cuisine exists outside Chinatown. The best Italian can be found in Woodbridge, a few municipalities away from Little Italy. So why would anyone believe Greektown, or more specifically the strip along the Danforth with the dense number of Greek restaurants, has the best Greek food?
Astoria Shish Kebab House, located in said area (390 Danforth Avenue at Chester), might actually have a legit best claim for kebobs: It took awards for Best Greek in NOW and Best Independent Greek in eye. What makes Astoria so much better (we’ll refrain from best) is definitely the potatoes. In fact, it’s all about the potatoes. Potatoes potatoes potatoes. The traditional Greek fare, which we will call the best bet at this restaurant, doesn’t disappoint either. The meat, after peeling the charred outsides, is ultra-tender. The service, with be-tied (definition: tie-wearing) wait staff everywhere, is very attentive. And, there’s a nice Euro ambiance where no one is afraid to throw back a bottle of vino at 3 p.m. (“El vino did flow!”) The best idea for Greek-lovers on the Danforth.
