The Mixtape Smorgasbord
Torontoist doesn’t have a lot of time now that summer is over. Not a lot of time to do up an indepth Le Mercredi Mixtape, that is, but don’t fear, there is some good new music here.
1. Amestory – “They’re Telling You You’ve Been Alive”
Amestory live and breathe in the cool dark beneath the piano’s top, in the body of the violin, breathing the sad sunless air. Although, Torontoist is surely glad Amestory’s sadness makes a beautiful noise. Funnily, Amestory vocalist, Mike Russell, doesn’t sound European, but reminds Torontoist of a few European singers. The band is from California.
2. The Fembots – “Count Down Our Days”
When Torontoist is laying in the tall cool grass, eyes closed, the hiss and chug of traffic almost absent from the air, The Fembots, “Count Down Our Days” is all Torontoist wants to hear. Until we realize that this could be the countdown to the first, dare Torontoist say it, snowfall? But it isn’t.

3. The Deadly Snakes – “By Morning It’s Gone”
This band play guitars made from Jack Daniels barrels. Made from the bar tops of condemned juke joints that witnessed prohibition! They play music built for a bar, but they ain’t no bar band. And they are Toronto’s own.
Now here are some bits and pieces of detritus that fell across the Torontoist desk this week…
Nada Surf will be touring Europe with John Vanderslice beginning in November. Plus Vanderslice comes to the ‘shoe on October 10th.
Nada Surf – “Do It Again”
Torontoist has already offered up two tracks from JV’s latest, Pixel Revolt, so here is a great track from his previous album, Cellar Door.
John Vanderslice – “Pale Horse”
Cut Copy have a remix done by Chromeo of “Future”.
Cut Copy – “Future”
A video of Franz Ferdinand doing “Do You Want To”.
And finally a nice remix of one of the smoothest R ‘n’ B voices to grace a speaker cabinet, Curtis Mayfield.
“Move On Up” remix by Erick Kupper.
