Descanter Mark sends us this post about the literary mag’s swish fundraiser tonight:
Descant Magazine has been bringing out the literary noise for the past 36 years with a commitment to publishing new and emerging writers, and visual artists, alongside such established names as Barbara Gowdy, Alberto Manguel and Edward Burtynsky.
And now Descant is throwing a party to celebrate its writers and readers. The Descant Book Ball 2 takes place TONIGHT at Sorauren Studios (22 Sorauren Avenue), near Queen and Roncesvalles.
The Book Ball is Descant’s annual fundraising bash and this year offers a bacchanal inspired by the cultural delights of Venice – sip some prosecco or a beer out in the piazza while a roving accordionist weaves through the crowd and handmade gelato is spun by the mustachioed ladies of Kensington Organic Market Ice Cream.
But where’s the experimental opera, you ask – ah, come inside my friend, Fides Krucker is getting set to perform.
Readings, music, free food and drink – oh my! For $50 you can stuff your face with complimentary catered fare and tip many a glass all night long.
For those looking to pick up a souvenir or trinket from Canada’s best and brightest literati and artists there is a live and silent auction. Place a bid on Atom Egoyan’s very first razor, a Bangladeshi shiplight from Burtynsky’s Shipbreaking series, a signed Charles Pachter silkscreen and posters, or a pinecone, rock and bark from Margaret Atwood.
The Descant Book Ball 2 – To Venezia and Beyond gets underway at 7pm tonight Friday, September 30th, 2005 at Sorauren Studios, 22 Sorauren Ave. Tickets are available at the door for $50.
