The Rochester Diaries: Get Catty!
The Rochester Ferry resumed service with little fanfare a few weeks ago, so without fan and with fare, Torontoist boarded ‘The Cat’ last evening, en route to a week of art study, and visits to Rochester’s umpteen cultural institutions. Check-in was easy, wait times were negligible, and annoyance was minimal, though we did find ourselves growing catty over the loud talkin’ tourists’ inability to shut up…but hey, we were sitting in the TV-free zone. Come on!
The boat itself was all kinds of awesome. Uncrowded enough for travelers to take whole swaths of space to themselves, and smooth enough for Torontoist to forget we were on a boat. They show bad movies in two theatres, for those who want to sleep their way to the U.S., and there are numerous bars with reasonably cheap drinks. The food is awful, and expensive. Bring your own chocolate chip rice crispie treat.
Arrival in Rochester is fairly seamless as well, Customs surly but short. Door to door – 3 hours, 45 minutes. Not bad.
For the next few days we’ll check out the Rochester that Jan Wong might have missed. Especially since no one we’ve met thus far has even heard of the ‘garbage plate.’
