Ist List: Best Used CD Store # 3

Counting down the top used record stores in Toronto….
sonicboom.gif3. Sonic Boom (512 Bloor St W)
Sonic Boom takes the cake for the largest used record store around downtown. But with great size comes great…patronage. That is to say, everything’s been picked-over. Good luck finding anything Pitchfork-approved or even remotely hip – it’s either not there or upwards of $20 new. Even old Whiskeytown records (is that hip?) break the $20-mark with tax. Sonic Boom isn’t for someone looking for a specific album though; it’s for the spurr of the moment record buyers. On the average day (Mondays are arguably the best), one can find rare-ish CD’s like Beat Happening’s first album or the new Jens Lekman EP for cheapo. Scuff-marked discs mostly always play skip-free, there is always a robust used collection, and they buy ANYTHING (although hold out on the 25 cent offers, you can do better). For those reasons, Sonic Boom is your number three used store in the city.
(#2 on tomorrow, and #1 on the day after tomorrow.)
