Back to the Future
The birds-eye photo of the Toronto skyline on the cover of the fourth issue of Spacing magazine couldn’t be more appropriate for an issue exploring Toronto’s past and Toronto’s future. The crystal ball like curvature of the photo gives the illusion of peering into Toronto’s hopefully very bright future yet at the same time one can’t help but feel like they’ve got the city in their hands.
The editors of the award-winning magazine have given us stories about what Toronto might look like in 2043 and other exhilarating ideas: placing loud speakers on the CN tower, like a giant muezzin or turning the SkyDome (It’s just plain silly to call it the Rogers Centre) into an arcology.
Equally breathtaking are the stories of what might have happened had Toronto not chosen Viljo Revell’s City Hall or if Frederick Gardiner had gotten his way and was able to turn Toronto into a city of highways. These stories are equally important as warnings from the past that the maintenance of public spaces require constant vigilance not just from our public officials but also from each of us.
The new issue of Spacing hits the stands Monday. There’s also a launch party Sat. June 4, 9pm at the El Mocambo. $10 gets you in, and a copy of the mag. Buttons and TTC Guides will also be on sale.
