When Police Chief William Blair said yesterday that “everyone in Toronto can help promote personal and public safety” this Toronto Police Week, he did mean everyone. Well, recovering cocaine addicts can be included (drug addicts are people too), but not bizarro, quasi-vigilante Scarborough thugs The PeeWee Herman Gang (weird). As many times as the Chief’s ‘work together’ stock phrase can be reinterpreted, this year’s Toronto Police Week 2005 is going for one message: Building Safer Communities.
So for the next five days, we should probably lay off our discussions of mandatory drug testing, corruption, and even racial profiling to come up with community-based solutions to crime problems. We will, however, squeak out one quick name tag remark: Wouldn’t it be better to know the names of the men and women we are celebrating this week?
