A New Tradition…
The Toronto Lynx have their work cut out for them if they are planning on contending in the USL’s First Division this season. After starting the year with six consecutive road games, the Lynx return to Centennial Park this Sunday after only managing a pair of ties so far. With their next three games here in T.O, it is crucial that they start off on the right foot this weekend… Whichever foot that may be. Unfortunately, this may prove a tough task as they are facing an unbeaten Montreal side, which has looked extremely strong to this point. Coach Herbert Busby Junior’s side has had trouble finding the goal so far this year. They will be counting on striker Ali Gerba to start converting a few more of his opportunities as they look for him to duplicate last year’s production.

This past Tuesday, Torontoist got a hands-on look at the 2005 Lynx team… and the Adorable Sports Writer is still feeling the pain. After twisting his foot in a heated game of basketball this past Monday evening, Adorable iced down his bruise in order to scrimmage with the Lynx the following morning. In what can only be described as a Kirk Gibson-like display of courage, he acted as the last-line of defense on numerous occasions to help preserve the 0-0 draw. If you’re confused, Torontoist is referring to the team’s media day earlier this week in which Coach Busby Junior was kind enough to invite Torontoist to take part in the practice.
The team is still very focused and surprisingly upbeat considering the hill they must climb if the plan on salvaging the season. Their positive attitude and work ethic will definitely provide them the chance for a turnaround given a few bounces in their favour.
Sunday’s game is set to kick off at 4:00pm, however not until Centennial Park is the site of another landmark sporting event immediately preceding the boys home opener. The Lynx sister team, the Lady Lynx will be kicking off their inaugural season at 1:00pm. The girls have a very talented young team centered around their midfield duo of 18-year old Amanda Cicchini and 17-year old Deana Everrett. Both girls grew up in Oakville, play on the national team, and plan on attending West Virginia University this upcoming fall. In the true spirit of an expansion team, thirteen of the eighteen roster players are W-League rookies. There will definitely be no shortage of energy on that sideline.
Centennial Park is located off Renforth Drive, just north of Rathburn Road.
