Feel Good Film Friday
If this TOist post were an Amazon book page it would say ‘Customers who purchased Spellbound also purchased Mad Hot Ballroom.’ But it would only say that because every bloody review feels compelled to refer to this doc, about grade school dancers of various socio-economic backgrounds, as the next Spellbound. Maybe it is, but TOist thinks the formula Spellbound + ballroom dancing = Mad Hot Ballroom is a bit simplistic. For once, it would be nice if they could just describe the film (Three groups of grade school students vie for a ballroom title, and in the process muse on a variety of subjects).
While some have called it a bit heavyhanded (voiceovers, egad!), if you’re not Sithing in another theatre this weekend, you’d do well with Mad Hot Ballroom.
Also, The Inside Ou fest is on. And TOist’s pick is The Gay Republicans, a doc that explores why gay republicans exist, or at least why they remain in the Log Cabin. Shows May 21st.
