Cakes…No Longer Our Vow to You

Once upon a time the Golden Wheat Bakery vowed cakes to us. We didn’t know why and we didn’t understand their creative use of ellipses, but we felt the offer was genuine, the mood inviting. And then two weeks ago the place was abruptly boarded up, its parties of gossipy old men forced to go elsewhere for their breakfast sweets and smoke. We feared the worst. But less than a week later, the Golden Wheat resurrected itself. It was the fastest makeover we’ve ever seen, with not a vestige remaining of the place’s former decor (or lack thereof). Except of course the baked goods – those are exactly the same. And still delectable, cheap and rather pretty under the fancy new lighting and freshly-painted walls.
But how will the oldsters respond to their swanky new environs? TOist thinks they’ll like the new art, new attitude and new patio, though we ourselves miss the cafeteria-chic shabbiness a bit. And the sign.
