Reaching Critical Mass
Now that the weather is warming up again and the wimpier of us can cycle again, it’s also time to remember that cycling can be dangerous in a city where the car is king.
The expansion of bike lanes are often fought by developers and locals afraid of losing parking spaces, road space and being invaded by those nasty nasty cyclists. Even when they’ve been implemented, drivers park in those lanes with impunity, creating a hazard for those who use them. Every year, many bikers are injured, or even worse killed, when inattentive drivers open doors, cut off or run into cyclists they don’t notice.
But once a week a group of riders can change that. Critical Mass is a worldwide movement that mobilizes cyclists to take to the streets of cities from Santa Fe to Seoul. Toronto’s group has been going strong since 1999 and rides on the last friday of each month. Why not join them today? Riders will be meeting at 6:00 pm at Bloor and Spadina and riding at 6:30.
